NASP EXPERIENCES
NASP Annual Convention 2016, New Orleans, Louisiana

On February 8 - 13, 2016, approximately 25 Chapman students traveled to New Orleans for the NASP annual convention.  Some students presented posters while others presented papers. For some, it was their very first time attending a NASP convention. Overall, it was an amazing experience for all that provided ample opportunities for both professional growth and networking. Below,  please read what some attendees had to say about their experiences at NASP!
Sarah Green, 3rd Year
"Overall, I really enjoyed the NASP convention this year. New Orleans was an awesome city that I recommend everyone travel to at least once in their lives! It seemed like the perfect setting for a conference, especially during such a lively time of year. During the conference, I presented a poster about intervention and prevention programs for bullying in schools. Overall, I think that it was a successful presentation and I was able to talk to a number of people in the field who had similar interests related to this topic. In addition to that, I enjoyed attending mini skills workshops and other sessions by Chapman students who were attending NASP. For first and second years, I would recommend presenting and attending as many conferences as you can while still in school. As we have all heard from our supervisors, it becomes much more challenging to try to take a week off to attend a conference once you are working in the 'real world.' Take advantage of the travel grant money and all the time and effort you put into your first year papers! Use them before you lose them."

Tori Downing, 2nd Year
"I presented with three amazing people in my cohort! Blaise Lallathin, London Blakely, and Enjoli Kidd. Blaise and I combined our first year papers and we presented our findings in a 50-minute paper presentation on Successful School Completion: A Three-Tiered Model Approach to Youth Dropout Prevention. This was our first time attending NASP; it was nerve-racking to present but it turned out to be an incredible experience! We ended up presenting to about 70 people and we had the support of lots of our Chapman family :) I will definitely present in some capacity next year. My advice to future presenters would be to remember that you do know what you’re talking about because YOU did the research! Also, to help with the nerves: sneak into the convention early and practice your presentation like we did, totally helped. "

London Blakely, 2nd Year
“This was my first experience at NASP and I had a BLAST! Giving a paper presentation was a really rewarding experience, and attending other presentations was very inspiring. I would recommend that everyone try their best to go as it is a really unique opportunity.”

Nick Riley, 2nd Year

"This was my first NASP experience, and presenting on my First Year Paper felt like a big accomplishment. Not knowing what to expect, and the large audience was certainly stressful at times, but it was that much more satisfying after the presentation. I recommend presenting on a paper if possible, because the momentum you gain from the experience is very helpful as you head back into your fieldwork and as you prepare for other presentations required by the CSP program."
